Designers have come up with the idea for a great device: an odor menu.
The device would allow the visually impaired to browse and select menu items by their smell. How various dishes’ scents would be captured and then diffused has yet to be created. Such an invention might revolutionize the world of dining for all.

Those lucky enough to be near Calgary can take the scent-guided tour of the city courtesy of Swerve, the city’s online event and culture guide. The rest of us will take have to take the virtual tour.

Thank heavens for more innovative technology at the park. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, just a hop from Newark, NJ is hosting the “Story of Scent,” a free walking tour of the natural smells narrated by a voice recording accessed through cell phones.
The tours are ongoing May – Setptember 2012 from 8 am – dusk

Calgon take me away!… Scholars Paul Rodaway, Tracey Lauriault, and Marc Brosseau have been busy exploring connections between literature, geography, and olfaction. Their work provides academic theory to similar projects by scent artist Sissel Tolaas, as well as perfumes designed to transport people to various destinations, for example, Byredo, Le Labo, Miller et Bertaux, Scent of Departure, Bond N° or time travel via Histoire de Parfums.

Dr Denise Chen, director of the Human Olfaction laboratory at Rice University, recently gave a talk about current theories on the relationship between olfaction and emotion.

Check out one of the most active olfactive artists, Peter De Cupere. His works include a piano that makes scent instead of notes, a massive tree trunk suspended an infused with odors meant to induce sadness, a garbage bag full of urban funk, and a smoke room.
